Make every decision count

Did you know that if you don’t make a decision then you give others the opportunity to decide for you? It’s called essentialism. (Source: Essentialism by Greg McKeown - Affiliate Link)

How does essentialism apply to you?

These days professionals wear many hats from caregiver to executive and many in between.

Essentialism helps you make decisions to move the needles forward on the priorities in your life vs spinning out from the weight of the responsibility.

Navigating white collar living and professional settings requires being able to manage being an individual and a team member on many teams from your family to your workplace.

Making decisions anchored in essentialism would be what my therapist calls keeping the glass balls in the air and allowing the plastic balls to fall. It’s your responsibility to identify out of all of the things you do which are the glass balls and which are the plastic?

What if I’m the first to do it?

When you’re the first, you don’t have a blue print. It’s all bets in to win.

Take the position you would if you were entering a game. Make career decisions like you’re playing to win.

When I first entered professional services I left too many decisions up to other people because I didn’t know I was supposed to take responsibility for it. I came from a unionized job where the decision making and advocacy was outsourced to my union representatives. I learned quickly when I had to live with the consequences of others making decisions for me from my pay, schedule, benefits and the sacrifices made to keep up with my workload.

Be strategic and targeted with your efforts

To know what’s essential you have to track what your value is in your market - like a car fax but for your career skills. I created this free career game plan to help track your value points. Knowing the value you bring to the workplace is essential to staying relevant and competitive in this digital workforce.

This gameplan will walk you through finding all of the elements in your career you’ve invested in. It is on you to figure out how to maximize your skillset like you do in boardgames.

Make every decision work for you

Every decision you make counts and needs to be a multidimensional play. Your career success needs to be planned and you need to be hands on about it. It’s no longer the time to wing it and figure it out. It’s time to get into the trenches and dig out your value to leverage for your relevancy now and future success now.
