Get in the Game or Get Left Behind
Your career is like playing spades. The goal is to run up the possibilities with the hand you’re dealt.
Know how to play your hand or don’t even bother occupying the seat.
Life dealt you a hand of cards. Whether your hand has
♠️ resources
♥️ opportunities
♣️ relationship
♦️ character
It’s on you to play your hand to the fullest. The way you play your hand determines if you reach your goals, not the cards you have.
I’m saying this from experience. I didn’t enter Corporate America with a security blanket. I had grit, motivation and a dream of providing my family a better life.
Here are the 4 phases of growth to play your resources to run up the possibles….
#1 Choose a path
Choosing the route best for you is an act of power and deciding how your resources will be used. It is the foundation of how the rest of your game goes. Letting other people choose your path keeps you in a cycle of questioning yourself too much. You can’t be indecisive within and navigate uncertainty outside.
#2 You rent the role you’re in + Own the Journey
Your ownership is in the decisions you make and the journey you’re on. You’re temporarily borrowing the roles you have to transfer the wealth to your personal enterprise. Position yourself to learn all you can to apply towards your future while you’re there.
#3 Develop skills + Share your perspective
We are no longer in a workforce where your work shows for itself. It’s your responsibility to draw visibility to skills you develop. Your skill set is perishable, it’s important to develop skills, talk about what you’ve learned and keep learning.
To know your skills are impactful you have to capture and measure how your involvement on projects makes others take action. Take the extra hour a week to update your progress and make the post on @linkedin or to build the case study. It’s the extra step needed to build your #personalbrand and #influence in your market.
#4 Invest your choices to advance or exit
Based on what you’ve learned from the last 3 phases you have to choose before others choose for you…
Are you staying in the game to level up or are you exiting on your terms?
If you’re exiting, throw in your cards at your pace. If you’re staying in, go to the next level and 🔁 repeat steps 1-3 in the order you need to keep building your influence.
The timing of your seasons depend on your environment, commitment level and management style of your resources.
Staying relevant in the digital age requires a plan
